General Information About Burghausen

Tourism in Burghausen

In spite of the fact that Burghausen is currently not so well known to non-European tourists, the town enjoys a steady flow of visitors on the part of western and eastern Europeans. Consequently, the level of tourist services and security here is very high and business or essential facilities (communications, banks, transport, medical facilities) are close at hand, plus prices are more than reasonable.

Although I might have given you the impression that jazz is the main attraction here, there are lots of other leisure time activities for the tourist, visitor or resident. A visit to Burghausen castle complex (the longest in Europe) and its museums, restaurants and cafés (as well as a special photography museum) can easily fill an agreeable weekend. Burghausen and the whole surrounding region are covered with special biking, hiking or walking paths and trails, and bicycles can be rented at several local bike shops. Swimming is popular throughout the year with the Worhsee (lake) and outdoor swimming pool in summer and the George Meisgang baths in winter (named after a former Burghausen mayor who was instrumental in starting up the first Burghausen Jazz Festival in 1969).

As time passes, we will add more links to restaurants, cafés, clubs and other leisure time facilities. You might also check out our Reportages section and Other Clubs, Concerts and Venues.

Transport to, in and around Burghausen

Burghausen is served by direct train from Munich.

Trains run almost every hour to and from Munich (and Munich international airport) from 5:30 AM until 10:00 PM every day. During Jazz Week there are special late night trains from Burghausen to Munich. The official German rail site can be accessed in English and is quite easy to use, local transport schedules are included.

The local bus service covering most all of Burghausen (both old town and new town) runs regularly every half hour on week days and every hour on Saturday and Sunday until 7:00 PM. A complete round trip by bus, bringing you back to your point of departure, lasts exactly one hour. This is actually not a bad way to see quite a lot of Burghausen

During Jazzwoche Jazz Night there is a free shuttle bus between the new town (where the Waker hall is located) and the old town where the town hall, Jazz Kellar and most other music clubs are located.

European Bus Service

Bus services to the region (Munich, Ulm, Passau, Salzburg), but not directly to Burghausen, are available from many main cities in Europe. Eurolines
