Burghausen Jazz News
What’s Happening Jazz-wise in Burghausen

On the Occasion of Burghausen’s Jubilee Jazzwoche:

Nigel Kennedy, Holly Cole, Al Dimeola, Steve Turre and a whole range of great musicians are coming to participate in the fortieth year of Burghausen’s annual International Jazz Festival.

At this point in time everyone here is busy gearing up for the coming event and the posters are all over the town. If you wonder what all the fuss is about just browse through our website (or check out the official IG Jazz website in German) and you will see that there will be a number of prodigious quality artists appearing here in concert starting on March 18, 2009. For me, the high point of the festival will be the concert, since I have been wanting to see and hear him in concert for ages. Check out and listen online to Nigel Kennedy's newest album. However, there will be a bevy of stars from all around the musical spectrum for fans of many genres. I am also looking forward to seeing and on the next evening and, while I’m at it, I wouldn’t want to miss on Saturday. Other than that, I will probably chill out while listening to the Taylor Eigsti trio at the Jazz Keller, where there can always be some good jam sessions after the concerts.

will be on Saturday March 22

Every year on the night preceding the last day of the Festival, Burghausen Old Town hosts Jazz Night. Participants pay a modest fee for a ticket with which they can roam a number of different clubs, cafes, and restaurants and listen to a variety of music groups until early morning. This year (after the main concerts have finished) seven bands begin playing at 11 PM in seven different locations, and the music will go on into the early morning. Also on there is a free shuttle bus which runs till about 3 in the morning between the new part of town and the old town. This is useful if your hotel happens to be in the new part of town.

New this year:

European Junior Jazz Award

Burghausen will hold its first presentation of the “Burghausen European Junior Jazz Award.”

The selection of a winner from among the five finalists will take place in the town hall (Old Town) on the evening of Tuesday 17 March 2009. Admission is free.

This year’s Jazz Week Festival officially opens on Wednesday evening 18 March, with the winner of the Jazz Award playing the opening concert and setting the stage for the eagerly awaited Nigel Kennedy.

A new plaque

A new plaque for the will be unveiled on Sunday 22 March 2009 at 2:00 PM in the Old Town Square (in der Gruben).

The Burghausen Big Band will play a concert to accompany the unveiling ceremony.

Tickets will be available on Sunday at the b-Jazz office in the main town square.

If you wish to see whose names are already gracing the Street of Fame check out our compendium.

Each plaque represents at least one appearance in Burghausen by the artist named, and a place in Burghausen’s musical guest book and the “Who's Who” of Burghausen Jazz history. Till now, no word has leaked about who has been chosen for the new plaque.

Jazz Photos

Also this year there will be an exhibition of Jazz photos by Oskar Henn in the main hall of the Burghausen Kreissparkasse Bank from 13 March to 3 April 2009.

Old Friends

It’s nice to see that a couple of old friends, Gerald Cannon and Taylor Eigsti, will be coming back to Burghausen to play in this 2009 Jazz Week Festival.

, who is currently touring with McCoy Tyner, will be playing in Burghausen with the and the Taylor Eigsti trio will man the helm at the Jazz Keller every evening during . and Taylor both played here in the Ernestine Anderson band in 2006 and were among the musicians who came down to jam at the Jazz Keller after their concert. Great musicians and fine dudes.

This all promises of some great music at the Festival and some great after concert jamming in the Jazz Keller

New Friends

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Elisabeth Oei of Afrasia productions. And I must say, the lady gave me quite an education about the modern Jazz scene.

Elisabeth is currently producing and promoting the fabulous singer and Jazz artist Carmen Lundy (also on MySpace).

For those of you who haven’t yet heard , I suggest you check out her websites for a real treat. And for those of you who already know her, I am happy to join you as one of her increasingly large group of fans. I certainly hope that she will be appearing in Burghausen in the not too distant future.

Coming soon

You will soon find my review of ’s new CD “Come Home” as well as her already renowned CD and DVD “Live at the Madrid - Jazz and the New Songbook.”

Recent Past

Last month I attended the official presentation and release of the new Burghausen Big Band CD in the main hall at the Citizens’ building in Burghausen (new town). The event included a free concert by the Big Band, and the program consisted of some sophisticated new compositions by Jan-Peter Klöpfel from the new CD, as well as a selection of popular Jazz standards.

You may also get full information in German about the extensive Burghausen Jazz Association program at their interesting official website.
